Crystallization of amorphous phenytoin films vacuum deposited on a silica substrate was studied by Nanosurf AFM. Spontaneous crystallization in films of various thickness as well as crystallization induced by interaction with an AFM tip during the non-contact imaging lead to the formation of distinctly different crystalline surface structures.
